PROJECT 2 Part B Team: THE SYNECTIC PINBALL MACHINE

Posted on: April 21, 2010

PROJECT 2 Part B Team: THE SYNECTIC PINBALL MACHINE Due Sunday 23 May Week 11

The idea of combining two things in this Project 2B (a current issue and creative thinking techniques) is based on the observation that sometimes, in retrospect, the most creative ideas can seem like commonsense.

As a Team, select a contemporary issue currently being debated in the newspapers, and process it as a Team exercise in brainstorming through the Synectic Pinball Machine. Collectively summarise what new and original options, outcomes, solutions and creative ideas this produced.

Project 2B is broken up into 2 parts:

1. Each team member must select and present a theme or topic to their Team related to an issue or question they have regarding the world today, sourced from the newspapers.

Can be local, national or global

2. For this Project 2B your Team needs to come up with a new idea related to the theme or topic, and this is the second part.

Everyone thinks of an issues and presents it, but only ONE is chosen (as a group) for the assignment.

Once you have selected and agreed on ONE theme or topic, process it through the Synectic Pinball Machine. (WTF?)

Brainstorm in your team lateral approaches to creative new ideas related to your team’s chosen theme/topic.

You should select which pins you wish to use and apply – you don’t hit the idea (the ball) off all of them – only a few – I would suggest you use no more than THREE pins.

The format of the presentation of Project 2B is up to your Team, but you must use both VISUAL and VERBAL ways of communicating what you have researched and selected. You may find reading the Appendix on Critical Thinking which follows here useful as context.

ASSESSMENT CRITERIA:
1. Ability to plan and create to a set timeline a Team Project from collective discussion, selection, and application of the Synectic Pinball Machine Processes to a theme/topic chosen by the Team.

2. Ability to generate new creative ideas from applying a specific technique.

3. Ability to document and present in both visual and verbal form the outcomes of the Team Project.

Proposed Team Timeline:

19/4/10: Each group member presents ideas
26/4/10: Decide on which issue we’ll do and which parts of the pin ball machine we’ll hit. (Group chat x1 this week)
3/5/10: Brainstorm and plan solutions. Drafts of end design shared. (Group chat x2 this week)
10/5/10: Final design chosen. Content written by appropriate group members and collaged. (Group chat x1 this week)
17/5/10: Finalise project (Group chat only if necessary)
